If I had to describe myself with one word it would be artist - a visual artist and an artist with words. My artwork is included in Ohio Online Visual Arts Registry. I'm working with various galleries in the Midwest to promote my oil paintings and abstract light photography.

Fishtown – Leland

One of our favorite stops last summer was Fishtown, a lively tourist spot in Leland, Michigan that celebrates the village’s Great Lakes commercial fishing heritage. At the picturesque location along the tranquil Leland River fisherman return with their catch to docks lined with fish shanties, racks of drying nets, boats, and fish tugs.

Many of the fish shanties are original to the 1900s when fisherman would bring the catch to the safety of Leland’s harbor to process and ready for shipment to the big cities. Fishtown is one of the only working commercial fishing villages in Michigan. It was designated a Michigan State Historic Site in 1973 and soon after, in 1975, earned a listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fishtown remains a lively commercial hub where families can enjoy wandering the labyrinth of historic buildings. Most of the small shanties have become shops, locally owned with art and goods produced locally.

Summer 2020 should be a very active season once again thanks to the continuing enthusiasm of the Fishtown Preservation Society that was established in 2001 to promote and preserve the historical and fishing heritage of Fishtown.

Restaurants, ice cream snacks, and additional shops are located mainly in the uptown areas along M22 where the best parking can be found. River Street provides access to Fishtown from M22, about a two block walk west from M22 to the harbor.

Uptown is fun but the unique character of Fishtown makes it a destination worth leaving the beach to visit when vacationing on the Leelanau Peninsula.
