Fort Ancient – Native American Culture in Ohio
Digging and Dancing
This link will take you to an article that I wrote for Long Weekends Spring Summer 2009. The Fort Ancient site, north of Cincinnati just off of I-71 is many things – museum, archaeological site, Native American historical gathering place but the scholars do not believe it was ever a fort. It is a mystery worth investigating, especially the astrological links – and it has great programs for kids.
UPDATE: The Dayton Society of Natural History is now partnered with Fort Ancient and this has resulted in additional programming, reduce admission charges, and an increase in hours of operation. Hooray!
NOTE: The Annual Fort Ancient Celebration: A Gathering of Four Directions, the largest Native American themed educational event in SW Ohio, is scheduled for the second weekend in June each year.
