Southern Plantations
Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens, South Carolina
Romance of the South
Visiting stately Southern plantations in the cooler months has many advantages: warm but not hot weather, smaller crowds, and camellias. I recently wrote an article for Group Tour Media about six Southern Plantations including Boone Hall shown above.

Some of my favorite historic plantation properties are Magnolia Plantation in South Carolina near Charleston and The Hermitage near Nashville, Tennessee. Plantation visits were part of a recent Southern trip along the Natchez Trail in late winter that included visits to Biloxi and then New Orleans and the Bayou country. Camellias are winter blooming and bulbs bloom earlier than up North. The trees were beginning to leaf out in the Delta country in late winter.
The cat shown here was sunning on the porch of Cottage Plantation, a former plantation property near St. Francisville, Louisiana between Natchez and New Orleans. We traveled in early March. Daffodils were in bloom around the large cottage on the 518-acre property. It was just a short walk to the “big house” – under trees hung with Spanish moss, past camellias in bloom in the garden. We had a full breakfast served on fine china surrounded by family heirlooms from past generations and then a tour of the mansion.
