If I had to describe myself with one word it would be artist - a visual artist and an artist with words. My artwork is included in Ohio Online Visual Arts Registry. I'm working with various galleries in the Midwest to promote my oil paintings and abstract light photography.

Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill 2018

A Peaceful Sojourn

© Becky Linhardt 2018

Early morning and twilight are two of the great pleasures, and privileges, of staying overnight at Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill in Kentucky. This year I decided it was time to revisit the simple pleasures. For photographers the early morning light can be heavenly and a feeling of calm seems to settle over all. I’ll let my images tell most of the story.

Accommodations are available at the Trustee’s House and in Family Dwellings at both the West and East ends of the “turnpike,” the original route for US 68 through the village.

Hours for the day trippers are from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. so before and after those hours the village population is small, just the overnight guests, employees, and the farm animals grazing in the pastures and maybe a few butterflies flitting through the wildflower meadows.

A slow walk from the West Family Dwelling to the Trustee’s House is so peaceful. Arriving for breakfast, bright summer light on the inner porch illuminates the “simple” things, such as lemons in a bowl at the staircase.

Programs generally begin around 10:30 a.m. At the barn, staff explains the working farm that supplies many of the items on the menu at the Trustee’s House. There are animals in the pastures, exhibitions in many of the buildings, and some artists demonstrate crafts.

The Kentucky River flows nearby and Shakers would take their products to market from Shaker Landing. Now guests can board the Dixie Belle, a small sternwheeler to cruise the beautiful Palisades area to view the steep cliffs and the historic High Bridge.

There are more than 3000 acres interlaced with 37 miles of trails through restored prairies, woodlands, fields, and cane breaks for guests to hike or ride on horseback. Guest can board their horses in The Stables at the West Lot. Regular overnight guests can visit village horses, maybe even be lucky enough to stop by the stables on a weekend when they are readying the horses for carriage rides in the village.

Throughout the spring, summer, and fall events are scheduled for weekends. Concerts, art fairs, special farm dinners and more attract large audiences. I prefer the quiet of a mid-week visit.
