If I had to describe myself with one word it would be artist - a visual artist and an artist with words. My artwork is included in Ohio Online Visual Arts Registry. I'm working with various galleries in the Midwest to promote my oil paintings and abstract light photography.

Point Betsie Lighthouse, Frankfort

Point Betsie Lighthouse: A Place to Stay

© Becky Linhardt 2021

Travel opened up in June 2020 in time for the Point Betsie Lighthouse Association to be able to honor our June reservation, made the previous year soon after we visited the museum and learned of the 2nd floor apartment accessed from a small porch at the back.

The PBLA property sits in a county park space located at the end of a county road; is gated and closed at 5 p.m. The beach south of the lighthouse is open to the public. Set high on the dunes north of Frankfort, the view from the kitchen includes the southern edge of Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore Park, and occasionally one or both the Manitou Islands.

The front porch on the lakeside is the entrance to the first floor museum and has access to the lighthouse’s spiral staircase with a great “lighthouse keeper’s view” of the lake and shoreline. The associated Life Saving Station that can be seen to the south is now a private residence.

With its gorgeous views of Lake Michigan, sunset can be spectacular so visitors sometimes gather on the county beach at twilight. None of the apartment windows face west but you can enjoy great sunset views from the protective concrete apron at the water’s edge. From the apartment windows, the evening light can be mesmerizing.

The newly renovated apartment includes comfortable swivel chairs in the living room so you can watch activity on the small county beach, boats on the lake, or enjoy a good beach read without the sand. Meals and snacks at the kitchen table included gorgeous views north.

During the day, while exploring the PBLA property, I noticed little bunnies hopping in an out of the dune topping shrubs, but they were too fast for my camera. Wildflowers were easier to catch and in the early mornings things were very peaceful, soothing for the soul.

We are making a return visit; reservation in place for 2022. Daytime experiences were worth repeating and as overnight guests at the lighthouse we also have access to the night, a quiet public beach and the gorgeous dark sky. We could not believe how bright the stars and planets appeared to us, urban dwellers from highly lighted city and suburb.
